Rising gas prices are causing
parents to be thrifty with their Back-to-School
shopping. Many students may have to go back to
school without designer labels. Sales at Goodwill
stores and retailers like WalMart and Steve and
Barry's are expected to explode because of high gas
prices. Manpower reports that high gas prices have
caused 65% of Americans to reduce the amount of
money they spend on their hobbies and weekend
entertainment choices. 64% are dining out less while
29% are choosing fewer extracurricular activities
for their children. 33% are considering switching to
a job closer to home.
A Denton, Texas daycare center is under fire
after a 5 year-old walked out unattended and went to
a Hooters. The unidentified boy crossed two busy
streets and wandered into the restaurant before
servers greeted him and called the Imagination
Station Child Care Center. Deborah Pugh, who owns
the child care business, says the boy asked to go to
the bathroom and then slipped out a fire exit door,
which must, by law, remain unlocked.
American schools are worried that
students may pick up on a new trend that recently
started in China. Young women there are wearing live
fish as jewelry. The $20 pendants feature food and
two solid oxygen balls, which allow the fish to live
for as long as 3 months. Afer that, they can be
released into ponds or tanks by breaking open the
pendants. Fish advocates say the practice is cruel
and should be banned.

~ With the summer vacation season here, law
enforcement officials are reminding travelers to buy
locking gas caps. They say gas thieves are now
canvassing hotel parking lots at night in search of
cars that do not have locking caps. The traditional
twist-and-screw caps make it easy for them to
quickly siphon gas and flee.
FIND THE LOWEST GAS PRICES!!!
Here are a few of the best
search engine powered sites that track the
prices of gas nationwide, just pop in your zip to find the cheapest gas in your part of town:

Did you know: For every ONE
pound of methamphetamine produced in a home lab, SIX
pounds of toxic waste is generated? That said,
wouldn't you want to know if the house you were
thinking about putting an offer on was ever used as
a crank lab? YES!
Thanks to the Drug Enforcement Agency's new National
Clandestine Laboratory Register - you can find the
answer!

The Habitat ReStore is hosting a Rain Garden
workshop this Saturday (July 26) from 10am-noon at
Capitol Market. Rain Gardens are an environmental
initiative that collects polluted rainwater that
would normally flow into our storm drains (i.e. our
rivers and streams). They are literally gardens in
the middle of concrete - and the ReStore has the
only one in Charleston - for now. The idea is to
tell as many people as possible about the
environmental impact of rain gardens so business and
homes can include them in original designs. This
would be such a positive step in improving the
quality of the Kanawha River to name one example.
